UCF to Expand Space Medicine Research, Curriculum Aimed at Keeping Space Travelers Healthy

UCF’s College of Medicine has hired an internationally recognized space medicine expert to expand research into how spaceflight affects humans and create a space medicine curriculum for students across the university. Emmanuel Urquieta comes to UCF after serving as chief medical officer of the NASA-funded Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH) led by the Baylor College of Medicine.
UCF Research Blasts Into Space Aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard Rocket

When the Blue Origin space flight blasted off, it carried three UCF-led research studies aimed at keeping astronauts and equipment safe, and understanding the formation of our solar system. The experiments aim to enhance understanding of bone loss in space, how dust behaves in microgravity, and how seismic waves and shaking impact asteroids.

A health innovation hub grows in Lake Nona Medical City

The hospitals within Lake Nona Medical City are out to prove that collaborative, innovation hubs can be built from the ground up — literally. The medical city sits on 650 acres in the Lake Nona development in Orlando, Florida, and includes University of Central Florida’s Lake Nona Hospital, which is jointly run by UCF and HCA Healthcare; Orlando’s Veterans Affairs Medical Center; a Nemours Children’s Hospital; GuideWell Innovation Center; University of Florida Health’s Research & Academic Center; a training center for Johnson & Johnson and more.

Lake Nona Gets Community Health Report Card

Preliminary results of a long-term health study of the Lake Nona Community show many strengths and some concerns about area’s overall wellness. The good news: People who live, work and participate in activities in the community have very low levels of smoking. They exercise regularly and have strong support systems. The bad news: They have much higher alcohol and binge drinking rates than the national average, the majority do not eat fruit, dairy or vegetables daily, and nearly one-third report moderate to severe stress in their lives.
Fountain Life Opens Innovative Precision Diagnostic Center in Lake Nona

The newest center is located within Orlando’s acclaimed Lake Nona community and features innovative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to collect and assess data that can aid in diagnosing conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and neurodegenerative disease before they can cause harm. Data That Heals: Orlando’s Innovators Push Into Healthcare’s Frontiers With High-Tech Advances

UCF offered Ragavan space in a new, state-of-the-art healthcare and life sciences incubator at its Lake Nona Medical City campus to provide the company with the resources to mature. The technology has progressed to a working lab prototype, and Ragavan hopes it will one day help doctors, in-home nurses and worried parents rapidly diagnose anything from the flu or Lyme disease to other acute medical illnesses at the point of care.
